The Auverge is renowned for
being the region of lakes and volcanoes..
Lake Chambon was formed over 8000 years ago
following the eruption of the Tartaret volcano
which blocked the course of the river Chambon.
It is perfect for swimming, watersports and
fishing and covers around 60 hectares.
As it is fairly shallow (around 6m at the deepest
point), the water warms up quicklyand the path
around it makes for a pleasant walk (around 4.4km)
Lake Pavin
Around 7000 years old, this is one of the
youngest of France's volcanic craters and is
famed for its depth - which at around 90m makes
it one of Europe's deepest lakes.
It is surrounded by trees and is almost perfectly
round (about 800m in diameter)
Another impressive feature is that in clear
weather the water is crystal clear and a stunning
turquoise colour.
Lake Guery
Located higher up in the mountains, Lake
Guery was formed by a basalt river which
cooled to form a damn. Its water is clear
blue and is the home to trout as well as
the fish of our lakes; l'ouble chevalier.
Here you will also find the Centre of
Flowers and Fauna of the Auvergne
National Park which is also well worth a
visit.
There are also a number of quaint and
interesting villages for you to discover..
Besse and St Anastaise
A medieval village located at an altitude of 1050m.
There is a pretty church built with volcanic rock
at the heart of the village and on Monday
mornings (market day) you will lose yourself in
the maze of little streets, whilst discovering
the local products.
La Bourboule
A small thermal town with several old building
and impressive architecture. It is a water town
for two reasons; firstly for its thermal baths
which are as revitalising as ever and secondly
because of the Dordogne river which runs through
the centre of the Bourboule and can be enjoyed
from several pretty bridges over it.
Murol
Dominated by an impressive castle which
stands proud at the summit of a volcano,
Murol has a number of small shops and
restaurants which will give you the
opportunity to savour the cultural and
culinary delights of the local region.
Saint Nectaire
Famed for its delicious cheese - you can
learn about the history behind its
production and buy it fresh from the
farms!
The town also has a thermal bath which (as
dictated by French law) also permits it
to have a casino.
There is also a stunning Roman church
which never fails to impress.
